Track and Trace of Fast-Moving Consumer Goods

There has been exponential growth in the demand of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) or consumer packaged goods (CPG) which are often inelastic products which often touch every part of consumer life; including durable essential household items, perishable and packaged foods, beverages, toiletries, cosmetics, over-the-counter drugs and more. These types of products are typically characterised as frequent purchase goods, offered at low prices, with a short shelf life and have rapid consumption. They are classically sold at high volume and are delivered through an extensive and often complex distribution network. The logistics supply chain is crucial in the success of FMCG distribution. Transportation of FMCG products are in high demand where the timed delivery of often perishable goods to customers is crucial. Managing and maintaining complex schedules and delivery routes can often be challenging as the distribution network for high paced products is so widespread, which means tracking products between the merchant and the recipient is often very difficult. So the requirement for a Proof of Delivery note has become an essential piece of certification to prove the shipment has reached its final destination. What is the importance of Proof of Delivery? The Proof of Delivery (POD) function acts as a receipt to prove that a delivery has been completed. The POD provides accountability that the products have left the merchant’s premises and has reached its recipient. Typically finalised by a signature on the receipt, a POD normally includes important information such as the recipient’s name, time and date of delivery, address, contents of delivery and other related information.Originally produced as a 2 copy hand written document to be signed and kept by the recipient and the merchant, ways to speed up the accuracy and tacking of this service has evolved. Technology has been introduced where drivers now typically use handheld PDA devices connected to either a portable printer to provide a printed form of receipt once signed onscreen by the recipient or producing an electronic receipt which can be sent directly to the customer upon signature signoff. Printed receipts provide improved accuracy, immediate confirmation of the transaction and can be tailored depending on the recipient’s requirements. Linerless Labelling Solutions for E-commerce Logistics

    December 8, 2020

In today’s current economic climate, consumers are now turning to e-commerce not only due to convenience, but a way to access goods and services during the current pandemic situation. With heavy investment from businesses worldwide, the e-commerce business model is gaining momentum as a trading alternative within these uncertain times. E-commerce has created a logistics boom and the volumes of shipping labels which are now required are increasing rapidly. However with the uptake of labelling, there is a demand for the printing industry technology to evolve. Backing liner from traditional labels is often complicated and costly to dispose of. Some countries are already trying to tackle this issue by adding a tax on label backing liners as a packaging material. As an environmentally-friendly labelling alternative, businesses of all sizes are now turning to Linerless labelling, a labelling solution without backing liners. By significantly reducing paper thickness by removing the liner has added up to 40% more paper length per roll, which saves on costs and the environment. It improves work efficiency and reduces downtime required to load new paper rolls. Also removing unwanted liners which can sometimes end up on the ground. Linerless labelling is not a new solution, however the demand has grown in the numerous markets. With all technology, it doesn’t come without its challenges. There is often difficulty in ensuring reliability of the Auto Cutter and the handling of linerless media which can be overpriced and sometimes inconsistent in quality. Linerless labelling is a tricky material to handle as it may cause unexpected issues due to its high adhesiveness and absence of a liner. The key to being successful within this business is to procure the right media from the right channels. BIXOLON provides a range of linerless paper supplies called B-linerless™, supporting a wide range of media which will guarantee the reliable performance at a reasonable price. BIXOLON also offers a range of specialised printers, including the XL5-40, that guarantee industry’s No.1 reliability of the Auto Cutter. The XL5-40 delivers anti-jamming, anti-curling, long-lasting two platen rollers, special paper path and top down guillotine cutting system with high reliability. Another special function comes with BIXOLON’s peel off sensor, Taken Sensor™, next label will only be printed once the current label has been removed. For more information on BIXOLON’s XL5-40 Linerless labelling solution and B-Linerless™ media, please contact your local BIXOLON sales representative.

The Challenge: Reliable and Transparent e-Voting Solutions

    November 6, 2020

A growing number of organizations in some democratic countries have introduced electronic voting systems with the aim of improving various aspects of the conventional voting process. E-Voting ensures faster vote count and tabulation alongside extremely accurate results, while reducing the chance for human error. Furthermore, it requires only the amount of ballot paper to be consumed for those who actually attend voting so the costs could be saved. On the other hand, security issues have always been conjunct with the e-Voting due to the lurking threats of fraud. The concerns over paperless elections have particularly intensified since it was revealed that the US voter registration database and public election sites had been targeted by hackers. Experts have laid great emphasis on a traceable e-Voting system combined with physically printed vote records that enables stringent audits. In which case, the voting machine prints a paper trail with protected voter’s identity after a voter selects a candidate by digital means. The collected paper trails remain as physical evidence to prove that electronic vote is correctly counted without manipulation. BIXOLON’s SRP-Q300 Series, 3-inch cube type receipt printers are suitable to be integrated into this type of voting machine due to its compact size and simple design. Fast printing speed up to 220 mm/sec shortens the voters’ queuing time and the high print resolution ensures the accuracy of the ballot count. The reliable Thermal Print Head makes for the perfect solution to handle large volumes of ballot printing all day long, and the Auto Cutter reduces chance to reprint crumpled ballots causing delays. The SRP-Q300 Series delivers Direct Thermal printing operation without the need to replace toner or ink cartridges to print ballots and, they can be easily connected to the host system through a variety of interfaces including USB, Serial, Dual-band WLAN (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and Bluetooth 5.0 (MFi certified). In some places where power supply is not stable, smaller stand-alone voting machines are used for e-Voting. The SRP-Q300B with a built-in battery ensures longer than 18 hours of standalone operations which is ideal for integration in this application. Paired with mobile devices, BIXOLON’s printing solutions could also offer support to the electronic pollbook to streamline the voter check-in process. The SRP-Q300B and SPP-R200ll (2-inch), SPP-R310 (3-inch) mobile receipt printers have widely been deployed for this use in North America. The e-pollbook is a portable all-in-one connected case combining a laptop or tablet, printer, and normal data capture devices such as a card reader or signature pad. It simplifies the voter check-in experience, as well as supports *Same Day Registration by offering a fast and smooth process for elections with a high turnout eliminating the need to scroll through hundreds of names in the traditional paper pollbook to mark voters’ signature near their name. The name is simply searched and eligibility is verified through the e-pollbook system, a ballot with appropriate style is automatically matched and printed from the printer on demand. This solution speeds up the whole process and saves voters’ waiting time while eliminating risks of marking a signature on the wrong line of name. BIXOLON provides an impressive line-up of Receipt, Mobile and Label printers with a wealth of customer support, which could improve security, reliability and efficiency of e-Voting. To learn more about the solutions, please visit www.BIXOLON.com or speak to your local representative. *Same Day Registration (SDR) have been enacted in a total of 21 states plus the District of Columbia in U.S. as of 2020 to allow any qualified resident of the state to register to vote and cast a ballot all in that day. Changing Times: The Advancements of Online Food and Beverage Ordering in a Covid Era

    October 5, 2020

By the end of 2019, the food and beverage industry was valued at $5943.8 billion worldwide* however, due to the 2020 worldwide Covid-19 pandemic the industry has become one of the most hard-hit sectors. Plummeting sales due to forced closures followed by lack of customer confidence to return to their establishments since lockdown easing has forced restaurants, cafes, pubs and any business that serves in-house food and drink to evaluate their services and adapt to the demand for contactless ordering and home delivery. Technology has played a key role in the turnaround of hospitality operations with existing hardware and software being adapted for the integration of these new functions. Alternatively, new technologies are evolving to meet the growing change in customer requirements. Hospitality POS Systems of YesteryearConventionally, hospitality establishments used a centralised ordering system between the front of house and the kitchen to feed service orders to the kitchen typically connecting tablet devices, hand-held terminals or a stand-alone POS terminal to the kitchen via wired or cloud network. However, as businesses are now offering customers new mediums to order including third party delivery platforms. Businesses are looking at either costly updates to their current setups or face introducing additional ordering systems which can result in further screens and printers in a kitchen. As kitchen traffic increases from the front of house and external sources, it is more vital than ever for businesses to make sure prepared food is labelled and documented. From originally hand written notes or printed receipts, sticky labelling has provided the means for businesses to improve their service precision but still comes with its own limitations. Traditional label media comes in fixed label lengths, limiting the amount of content which can be added per label, often resulting in multiple labels to display information. Users are also limited by the number of labels per roll due to the silicon backing paper it is attached to. There has been great leaps within the labelling industry, with a real growth in popularity of linerless label printing, a cost-effective and flexible temporary or permanent sticky adhesive labelling solution. What is Linerless Labelling?Characterised as pressure-sensitive labelling, with a special release coating applied on the face of the label without the need for a silicon liner, linerless labels are available in a range of adhesive strengths depending on the required application. Linerless labels also provide up to 40% more labels per roll than traditional label media by removing the requirement of silicon backing paper. This enables linerless printing of variable label lengths, which is ideal for the precise documentation of customer contact details and order information, to then be placed onto the product packaging for delivery. Flawless Mobile Specimen Collection at Drive-through COVID-19 Test Centres

    September 21, 2020

As of September 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to spread despite months of persistent effort, involving 184 countries with more than 29.7million confirmed cases. While people around the world have been finding it hard to adapt to the New Normal, large-scale testing for the virus is considered to be of critical importance to identify cases as early as possible and conduct prompt contact tracing. In order to maximise testing capacity, a number of healthcare organizations have seen the advantages of drive-through testing such as the prevention of cross-infection between patients in a waiting space, the speed of administering tests and reduced staffing requirements. The steps in specimen collection at the drive-through test centres consist of registration, examination, specimen collection, and instructions. The samples collected at the site are identified with handwritten or printed labels including patients’ information and the time of collection for accurate testing at a clinical lab. Some countries where pre-registration is available, labels for specimens are prepared in advance to reduce the distance staff need to walk back and forth. Whereas in countries visitors will be seen without a pre-registration, where time is required to access identification and printing sample labels from a stationary kiosk. Labelling specimens far away from the point of collection would also increase the risk for errors. Equipping front-line workers with rugged mobile printing solutions enables the smooth running of the test site. Clinical staff scan a patient's ID using a mobile computer at a distance, and sends the data to the national hospital system to create an account. A specimen label can be instantly printed using the data and a mobile label printer. BIXOLON’s mobile printers are optimised for this application to enable optimum DT centres to functionality. Staff can save time reducing idle walking time between the car and the station to print a label, enabling workflow to be streamlined and the testing process is expedited. This will facilitate more tests for symptomatic patients and significantly elevate capacity of each centre per day. Labels instantly printed by the car can also help prevent mis-identification. Featuring the SPP-L3000 a premium mobile label printer,Fully rugged form factor enduring multiple drops from 2.1 m / 7 ftIP54 rate sealed to withstand water, dust and extreme weather conditions Perfect compatibility with major operating systems including Android™, iOS™ and Windows®Fast data processing and print speed of up to 5 ips (127 mm/sec)Longest battery runtimes with 2600 mAh capacity Reliable wireless capability simultaneously connecting both Bluetooth and WLANEasy to use with LCD and ergonomic design Put BIXOLON’s industry leading mobile technology in the hands of front-line workers to increase productivity and create a safer working environment in DT centres. BIXOLON's Linerless Labelling Solutions for Healthcare

    August 12, 2020

Hospitals are generally categorised as fast-paced environments requiring efficiency and speed to provide optimum patient care and maintain staff satisfaction. Staff are often demanded to carry out complex tasks working with sensitive information which requires precise reporting to reduce errors. Traditionally this type of information was hand written, however to improve the speed and accuracy there has been a rapid adoption of barcode labelling as a way to store, report and track important information within the Healthcare industry. Today, medical labelling is used for a variety of applications from documenting patient medical histories, diagnosis and treatment; to providing vital prescription information or documenting medical samples. Labels have become an important communicator for both medical facilities and pharmacies where accurate labelling of items can guarantee the right care is provided to the patient. However as the demand for medical assistance continues to rise, many institutions are looking for more cost and time-efficient labelling solutions. BIXOLON offers a linerless labelling solution which meets the market’s demand. Linerless media is a pressure-sensitive label with a special release coating applied on the face of the label without silicon liner. Linerless labelling solutions help to enhance time efficiency while reduce unnecessary slippery silicon-backed liner waste and even save operational costs. Linerless labelling offers the following benefits; ㆍ Time efficiencyㆍ Eco-Friendly ㆍ Safe working environment ㆍ More labels per roll ㆍ Cuts operational cost Since BIXOLON introduced its exclusive linerless label printer, the XL5-40 and B-linerless™ media to the Healthcare market, the printer has provided the industry with numerous efficiency and productivity printing benefits due to its initiative design and value added features. The linerless solution offers anti-jamming, anti-curling, long-lasting two-platen rollers, special paper path, and top down guillotine cutting system to provide high reliability and reduced maintenance. Alongside its Taken Sensor™, a peel off sensor, which allows a queuing system for labels so the next label will only be printed once the current label has been removed reducing labelling mistakes. The XL5-40 is also capable of printing up to 40% more labels compared to legacy label media. Supporting variable length label printing from a single printer, reducing printer expenses and media purchase, storage and transportation while offering greater flexibility for label design and content. The Easiest Way to Install Windows Drivers for BIXOLON Network Printers

    July 15, 2020

As network printers can be shared remotely by multiple users, requires less maintenance and training, they have been preferred by IT managers and most businesses have opted for them to produce receipts and labels. The only small drawback is that they are not as simple as plug-and-play devices to set up in the first stage. Connecting a network printer with manual settings could be a hassle which involves series of processes to input the IP address and create a port to install the drivers. Aligning with its ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive hardware and software solutions that raise the bar of process efficiency and productivity, BIXOLON has newly come up with the Network Auto Installer. The program remarkably simplifies the bothersome setup procedure with a one-click-installation by automatically detecting and retrieving the IP information of active printers currently connected to the same network as the host device. The software is specifically designed for BIXOLON POS, label and mobile printers in Windows based environment; Drivers by Seagull™ are only supported for label (mobile label) printers. BIXOLON believes that the Network Auto Installer will add some primary benefits to today’s efficiency-oriented workplaces. All that users are now asked is to tick the box for the auto installation option, select the printer from the list. The tool will do the rest without the need to click through multiple stages of Driver Wizard nor go back to the previous page to modify incorrect IP address. Just one click and the drivers will be installed. XL5-40 Exclusive Linerless Label Printer, A Game Changer for Cost and Environmental Solutions

    June 24, 2020

Productivity improvements, environmental regulation and TCO reduction are key points of all businesses. Manufacturing and T&L are more focused on improving operations like inventory management, shipping labelling, order releasing and packing. Linerless labelling solutions are a simple way to enhance the work process and reduce costs. Linerless media is a pressure-sensitive label with a special release coating applied on the face of the label without silicon liner. The absence of a silicon liner saves on the cost of extra labour, storage, transportation costs while reducing industrial waste and carbon emission. The Linerless media offers significant cost and environmental benefits compared to traditional gap media: The Lower Total Cost of Ownership More labels per roll: Liners take up physical space on label rolls; without silicon backing, Linerless media have approx. 40% more length in a roll. BIXOLON’s supply, B-linerless™ supports similar or more competitive price in comparison to general gap media.Greater productivity: By adopting linerless labelling solutions, there is no need to peel-and stick and dispose of silicon liner. Alongside, linerless media is capable to print multiple length labels on a roll plus requires less roll change frequency. This will help cutting downtime and increasing productivity and efficiency.Cutting storage and transportation expenses: Linerless media has no silicon backing liner allowing you to fit twice as many labels on a roll of the same weight and size; therefore, it will increase profit rate by decreasing transportation and storage costs. Greener & Safer Eco-friendly: Less waste disposal leads to less carbon footprint. Due to the release liner waste cannot be recycled or incinerated. Nearly 370,000 tons of silicon wastes were landfilled in the U.S. per year. Using linerless media will be beneficial to reduce disposal costs while saving energy costs. Improved safety: Slippery wastes on the floor can cause a safety hazard of manufacturing and warehousing operations. Removing the slippery release liners from the workplace can reduce potential slip-and-fall accidents. As noted, linerless media has outstanding benefits. Then the next consideration would be choosing the right linerless label printer that performs top-quality labelling. Recently introduced XL5-40 is the world’s first exclusive linerless desktop label printer which has unmatched features differently from an existing desktop label printer supporting linerless labelling functions as an option. Extreme Reliability Uniquely designed for Anti-jamming and Anti-curling features with long-lasting two-platen rollers and special paper pathThe only XL5-40 supporting top-down guillotine system that cuts the coated face of the paperPeel-off sensor, Taken Sensor™ will not continue to print until the current label is removedReliability at its finest in any harsh environment with BIXOLON supply, B-linerless™ and compatible with many certified linerless media by BIXOLON Flexibility Available print various length labels on a roll (min 30 ~ max 1,000 mm)Built-in Auto-cutter and peeler-off sensor, Taken sensor™Two sizes of media supporter for short and long media choice are included, preventing the cue media falling to the desk, counter space or floor. Food Safety Labelling Solution with the XQ-840 Tablet Embedded Desktop Printer

    May 14, 2020

There is a growing customer demand for a more efficient way to manage food safety labelling. Business owners are minimizing the amount of product that goes out of date and maximizing the use of their product. Product labelling should offer clear advice, but food safety labelling can add additional guidance that increases safety, improves procedures and a reduced impact on unnecessary waste therefore increasing profits and margins. Obstacles that business owners face are the ever change in regulations to food safety. The FDA will be rolling out and enforcing a new nutritional label standard, so consumers can expect to see up-to-date information on most products, and we will likely see many labeling issues come out with the revamping of labels. Companies will be looking for best industry practices for shelf-life labeling as it pertains to both quality and safety with clear “best if used by” and “best by” date labeling. The goal of food labelling is to provide consumers with infor¬mation that is factual and relevant about the products they consume. The food label allows consumers to compare one product to another, gives instructions for safe handling and storage, lists ingredients. Labels must be made of materials that do not contaminate the food. If there is likelihood that the paper, ink or adhesive of a label will touch the product or penetrate the packaging, these materials must be safe for food use. Thanks to the XQ-840 specialty label printer customers can now create food labels for all of their products and inventory to minimize waste and maximize the life of food products. This all-in-one type unique label printer embedded with an 8-inch Android Tablet will make the food labelling process simple and maximize uptime. The printer eliminates the need to pair a tablet or PC with a printer since it reliably communicates with an embedded tablet via USB connectivity inside of the same body. Due to its compact design, it will also save space in the workplace. Users can easily integrate their own professional application to the printer by using a suite of development tools supported by BIXOLON. The XQ-840 comes with Comprehensive software including Food Safety Label, Label Artist™ Mobile for Android™, BIXOLON Utility and BIXOLON Downloader. Since it supports 2 USB Host Ports + Ethernet + WLAN + Bluetooth interface, users can build an extended solution while using keyboard, mouse, Barcode scanner, etc. To find out more, visit Bixolon.com or speak to your local BIXOLON sales representative.

Order Labelling Solution with SRP-S300 Linerless Label Printer

    April 8, 2020

There is a growing customer demand for more sustainable practices within various market sectors, business owners are minimizing the impact on the environment with greener solution with liner-free printing. There is an increase in the personalisation of goods and services, so sales and process order labelling are being used to fulfil some or all of these custom and eco printing requirements. Product labelling should offer clear advice, but order labelling can add additional guidance that increases safety, improves procedures and leads to swifter transaction times. Thanks to the SRP-S300, low volume process and sales order labelling across multiple verticals including food and non-food retail can be easily integrated into these solutions. Equipped with a peel-off sensor, Taken Sensor™, the printer will automatically sense the issuance of a printed label and will not continue until this has been removed by the user themselves. This ensures that jamming is prevented and it allows for the pace of the application to be dictated by the user themselves. With its support of linerless (liner-free) media certain recycling and environmental considerations are met. Another great addition is that BIXOLON can also supply its own B-linerless™ or the suggested media list certified by BIXOLON, plus additional costs of ownership are further reduced with the printer’s special back-feeding and paper saving modes. For example, a major Coffee brand has implemented the SRP-S300, with that they have been able to reduce order times & reduce the risk of failure when taking an order hence a higher customer satisfactory rate. With the use of the SRP-S300, said major coffee brand has also been able to drastically reduce their carbon footprint while also reducing the cost of ownership. Backed by its class-leading connectivity choices; powered, wired and wireless, and range of service options and linerless media selection, the Bixolon SRP-S300 and its quality printing is the first choice for those who know order labelling. Digital-Age Transportation: BIXOLON’s Rail Sector Solutions

    March 2, 2020

A country's rail infrastructure is a key to its economic success, but the rail sector has not received the same level of attention as other pieces of infrastructure. This is however changing; private and public spending is leading to further investment plus expansion. While passenger rail travel and the movement of freight are also seeing an uptake. Digital technologies - IoT, Big Data and Cloud computing are being used to introduce improvements and efficiencies within the rail network, which are improving the passenger experience and increasing freight capacity. The digitisation or Internet of Trains is delivering data that passengers are using to better plan and undertake their journeys. Rail operators are using data to introduce safer control systems, manage assets and build improved service solutions around their rolling stock. This data is providing suppliers and manufacturers with greater confidence in a more fluid, reliable supply chain. The rail sector is also seeing greater cooperation between industry groups and governments. Legislative changes, new policies and programmes have resulted in opening rail infrastructure, creating a greater network length which is leading to competitiveness, further innovation and R&D. Governments are seeing rising transport demands, so investment in light and metro rail are being made. This is allowing workers to move quicker and further afield, while allowing cities to respond to congestion and pollution concerns. High-speed rail is seeing investment as it competes against other transportation modes, but there is pressure from environmental groups and a trend towards more sustainable, greener forms of transport. Rail is one of the most energy efficient transportation modes, but further investment is seeing greater decarbonisation of the rail industry with an increased use of alternative fuels, including hydrogen fuel cells and battery-powered locomotives. Supply chains are seeking to improve interconnectivity, increase visibility and provide operational benefits in both time and cost, but fundamentally become more sustainable while using more effective means of transport, resulting in a push to move from road to rail. Freight transportation groups are discussing how to lessen road miles and reward increased rail miles, while governments are working to open rail network across continents. Greater collaboration and cross-border cooperation are leading to a larger geographical network length allowing for seamless multimodal transportation and Silk Road extension.
