Linerless Labelling Solutions for E-commerce Logistics

    December 8, 2020

In today’s current economic climate, consumers are now turning to e-commerce not only due to convenience, but a way to access goods and services during the current pandemic situation. With heavy investment from businesses worldwide, the e-commerce business model is gaining momentum as a trading alternative within these uncertain times. E-commerce has created a logistics boom and the volumes of shipping labels which are now required are increasing rapidly. However with the uptake of labelling, there is a demand for the printing industry technology to evolve. Backing liner from traditional labels is often complicated and costly to dispose of. Some countries are already trying to tackle this issue by adding a tax on label backing liners as a packaging material. As an environmentally-friendly labelling alternative, businesses of all sizes are now turning to Linerless labelling, a labelling solution without backing liners. By significantly reducing paper thickness by removing the liner has added up to 40% more paper length per roll, which saves on costs and the environment. It improves work efficiency and reduces downtime required to load new paper rolls. Also removing unwanted liners which can sometimes end up on the ground. Linerless labelling is not a new solution, however the demand has grown in the numerous markets. With all technology, it doesn’t come without its challenges. There is often difficulty in ensuring reliability of the Auto Cutter and the handling of linerless media which can be overpriced and sometimes inconsistent in quality. Linerless labelling is a tricky material to handle as it may cause unexpected issues due to its high adhesiveness and absence of a liner. The key to being successful within this business is to procure the right media from the right channels. BIXOLON provides a range of linerless paper supplies called B-linerless™, supporting a wide range of media which will guarantee the reliable performance at a reasonable price. BIXOLON also offers a range of specialised printers, including the XL5-40, that guarantee industry’s No.1 reliability of the Auto Cutter. XL5-40 Exclusive Linerless Label Printer, A Game Changer for Cost and Environmental Solutions

    June 24, 2020

Productivity improvements, environmental regulation and TCO reduction are key points of all businesses. Manufacturing and T&L are more focused on improving operations like inventory management, shipping labelling, order releasing and packing. Linerless labelling solutions are a simple way to enhance the work process and reduce costs. Linerless media is a pressure-sensitive label with a special release coating applied on the face of the label without silicon liner. The absence of a silicon liner saves on the cost of extra labour, storage, transportation costs while reducing industrial waste and carbon emission. The Linerless media offers significant cost and environmental benefits compared to traditional gap media: The Lower Total Cost of Ownership More labels per roll: Liners take up physical space on label rolls; without silicon backing, Linerless media have approx. 40% more length in a roll. BIXOLON’s supply, B-linerless™ supports similar or more competitive price in comparison to general gap media.Greater productivity: By adopting linerless labelling solutions, there is no need to peel-and stick and dispose of silicon liner. Alongside, linerless media is capable to print multiple length labels on a roll plus requires less roll change frequency. This will help cutting downtime and increasing productivity and efficiency.Cutting storage and transportation expenses: Linerless media has no silicon backing liner allowing you to fit twice as many labels on a roll of the same weight and size; therefore, it will increase profit rate by decreasing transportation and storage costs. Greener & Safer Eco-friendly: Less waste disposal leads to less carbon footprint. Due to the release liner waste cannot be recycled or incinerated. Nearly 370,000 tons of silicon wastes were landfilled in the U.S. per year. Using linerless media will be beneficial to reduce disposal costs while saving energy costs. Improved safety: Slippery wastes on the floor can cause a safety hazard of manufacturing and warehousing operations. Removing the slippery release liners from the workplace can reduce potential slip-and-fall accidents. As noted, linerless media has outstanding benefits. Then the next consideration would be choosing the right linerless label printer that performs top-quality labelling. Recently introduced XL5-40 is the world’s first exclusive linerless desktop label printer which has unmatched features differently from an existing desktop label printer supporting linerless labelling functions as an option. Extreme Reliability Uniquely designed for Anti-jamming and Anti-curling features with long-lasting two-platen rollers and special paper pathThe only XL5-40 supporting top-down guillotine system that cuts the coated face of the paperPeel-off sensor, Taken Sensor™ will not continue to print until the current label is removedReliability at its finest in any harsh environment with BIXOLON supply, B-linerless™ and compatible with many certified linerless media by BIXOLON Flexibility Available print various length labels on a roll (min 30 ~ max 1,000 mm)Built-in Auto-cutter and peeler-off sensor, Taken sensor™Two sizes of media supporter for short and long media choice are included, preventing the cue media falling to the desk, counter space or floor. Digital-Age Transportation: BIXOLON’s Rail Sector Solutions

    March 2, 2020

A country's rail infrastructure is a key to its economic success, but the rail sector has not received the same level of attention as other pieces of infrastructure. This is however changing; private and public spending is leading to further investment plus expansion. While passenger rail travel and the movement of freight are also seeing an uptake. Digital technologies - IoT, Big Data and Cloud computing are being used to introduce improvements and efficiencies within the rail network, which are improving the passenger experience and increasing freight capacity. The digitisation or Internet of Trains is delivering data that passengers are using to better plan and undertake their journeys. Rail operators are using data to introduce safer control systems, manage assets and build improved service solutions around their rolling stock. This data is providing suppliers and manufacturers with greater confidence in a more fluid, reliable supply chain. The rail sector is also seeing greater cooperation between industry groups and governments. Legislative changes, new policies and programmes have resulted in opening rail infrastructure, creating a greater network length which is leading to competitiveness, further innovation and R&D. Governments are seeing rising transport demands, so investment in light and metro rail are being made. This is allowing workers to move quicker and further afield, while allowing cities to respond to congestion and pollution concerns. High-speed rail is seeing investment as it competes against other transportation modes, but there is pressure from environmental groups and a trend towards more sustainable, greener forms of transport. Rail is one of the most energy efficient transportation modes, but further investment is seeing greater decarbonisation of the rail industry with an increased use of alternative fuels, including hydrogen fuel cells and battery-powered locomotives. Supply chains are seeking to improve interconnectivity, increase visibility and provide operational benefits in both time and cost, but fundamentally become more sustainable while using more effective means of transport, resulting in a push to move from road to rail. Freight transportation groups are discussing how to lessen road miles and reward increased rail miles, while governments are working to open rail network across continents. Greater collaboration and cross-border cooperation are leading to a larger geographical network length allowing for seamless multimodal transportation and Silk Road extension. Printing in Chilled and Cold Conditions

    December 3, 2019

Printing in Chilled and Cold Conditions Technology use is developing at a pace and the use of mobility is driving change in many vertical markets. A growing mobile workforce means printing at the point of picking, packing, identification or dispatch is accessible to all corners of the warehouse or every doorstep in town. However, how can you be sure that your print quality is maintained across a range of temperatures? The operation of thermal printers in conditions with less than ambient temperatures will often result in poor, illegible print output if any at all. There are an increasing number of companies in the postal, medical, retail and pharmaceutical sectors looking for more effective labelling solutions in cold conditions. Traditional operating procedures - printing in one place and labelling elsewhere, mean that processes cannot be improved. This is counterintuitive to what is actually happening in many verticals. The refrigerated production, storage and distribution of foods and medicines is experiencing growth and this is resulting in investment in this sector. Some of this is due to our changing consumer habits and our wish for fresher foods faster, plus we are witnessing improving legislation to make our foods and medicines safer. Whilst sensors, data, networking and AI might be components parts of these temperature-controlled supply chains it is still in many cases the humble barcode that instigates this activity. Therefore, having the ability to print a quality barcode at source is paramount. Unseasonal weather conditions or longer, more inclement winters are also a consideration when addressing the printing needs for a workforce operating outside in chilled and cold conditions. Workers in many verticals, including Agriculture, Forestry, Parking Management, Policing, Scene of Crime and Postal, have a need to output a variety of different print formats – identification or asset labels, receipts or notifications, which are expected to be available on-demand. BIXOLON's award winning design of mobile printers have proven cold temperature operation. Portable Printers in Transport and Logistics

    May 21, 2018

We’ve all had things delivered after buying online or placing an order at the shops that had to be delivered. The deliveries are sometimes made, and a delivery note printed on the spot using a portable printer that the driver carries. These devices are often linked via mobile telephone technology to the logistics company’s systems for tracking, stock control, and financial reporting. Behind the scenes, though, there is even more mobile printing technology in use. The products in the warehouses are often labelled to note what product it is, where it is stored, and its age. These bits of data are often placed in a barcode that can be printed from a tablet, mobile phone, or any device connected to the local WiFi network. These labels allow the individual object to be tracked throughout its progress, from manufacture to delivery. Another use the mobile printing devices have is to create labels for boxes when there are a few items being packed for shipping. The system will record all that goes into the box via scanners, and can prepare and print off a label (with or without a barcode) to inform the recipient what they’re getting, but also (with barcode) allow for tracking via the use of scanners connected to the mobile phone networks. One of the great advantages to the technology is its flexibility. There are printers that will connect to almost any device. It might be best for some of the team to use mobile phones (iOS, Android, etc. are all compatible). For presentation of information to customers, it may be more useful to connect to an iPad or other tablet. Portable printers are also available for those devices. There are also products that can be used when the actual sales are taking place on the road. For mobile retail businesses such as coffee vans, credit card payments can be taken, receipts taken, and stock noted by having the systems interconnected. All the customer sees is that he has his cup of coffee quickly and easily. But the business has streamlined so many things that the savings in running the business is significant. The main benefit to your business do come in much improved time efficiency. Rather than chasing around trying to find a package in the system, the door-to-door tracking capability allow you to quickly locate it and inform your customer. The more advanced systems even allow the customer to track their packages online. The cost savings in stock management is even more compelling. Manual inventory can be cut back to a great extent. Placing orders for restocking can be automated. Time put into these things can be saved, and time is always very valuable. Development in Label Printing

    January 29, 2018

Since the introduction just-in-time delivery, asset management and enterprise productivity label printing technology has played a key role in product identification to allow easy asset documentation and tracking. As there is increased pressure to improve the collection or data, many companies are moving away from traditional pen-and-paper processes and investing in technology to increase efficiency. While the demand continues to rise, the development for technology, particularly around areas of label printing continues to intensify. Used as one of the most basic forms of product tracking, product labelling has improved the efficiency throughout the complete supply chain. Using tracking data such as Picket Fence or Ladder barcodes to store simple numbers to innovations such as 2D or QR code labelling to hold part numbers and important product data. Standardising label printing Originally the production of labels today will come from a desktop label printer connected to a basic PC. Before use, labels will need to be designed using a dedicated label printing software. Newly designed template would be downloaded from the PC and stored on the memory of the printer. Memory size will dictate the ideal number of labels which can be stored on a printer. Customers needing to print more than one size of label will likely have to purchase multiple printers to save time and manpower continually reconfiguring the printer. Launch of mobile printing As the requirement of printing across all industries continues to advance, the arrival of new light-weight mobile printers connecting to smart devices are quickly replacing traditional desktop printers and PC set-ups. These new mobile devices are being developed to provide scan to print solutions, removing the need for pre-stored data and additional hardware. Providing flexibility and increased productivity, mobile printers can reduce printing costs across all market sectors. With Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity innovation at their core, handheld devices such as PDAs can easily be linked directly to a supply chain network. Communication between the network server and handheld device enables easy information download and storage, enabling easy warehouse product picking or logistics delivery. Progression in printing technology has paved the way for new technologies such as of Near Field Communication (NFC), making it even simpler to pair handheld devices with accompanying printing technology. But what about the media? As the use of labelling continues to diversify, there has been major leaps in the development of label media. While printers are becoming more adaptable, the requirement for dynamic print media for the changes in environment, usage and technology continues to grow. Resulting in a necessity for technology such as specialised linerless label printing. Delivering increased flexibility and an ecological alternative to traditional label media by eliminating the waste bi-product of silicon backing paper originally used in labelling. Linerless label rolls offer double the number of labels per roll. Linerless labelling also aids the possibility of providing clean cut variable label length. As the role of labelling continues to evolve and the importance of Auto-ID continues to rise in improving data entry, tracking and more. The requirement for accurate label referencing is becoming increasingly important across all industries.
