Mastering Parcel Delivery: How In-House Labelling Can Transform Your Ecommerce Operation

    September 24, 2024

In the ecommerce industry, the quality and timeliness of parcel delivery can make or break customer satisfaction. For small ecommerce businesses, ensuring that parcels arrive on time and in perfect condition is critical. That's why more and more of these businesses are taking control of the process by bringing parcel labelling in-house. BIXOLON explains how this shift can enhance the customer experience and boost business success. The Delivery ImperativeEcommerce companies have long recognised the importance of a robust, reliable delivery experience, from offering customers delivery choice to ensuring products arrive on time. However, new research reveals just how damaging a poor delivery experience can be: almost two thirds (63 %) of frequent shoppers in the UK will abandon an online retailer over a poor delivery experience. The situation is similar in France, where 53 % of shoppers will abandon a retailer, dropping to 38 % of German shoppers. Clearly, improving shipping and delivery processes holds significant value. Yet many smaller businesses continue to struggle with delivery certainty due to extended queues at Post Offices and damaged barcodes and labels, which leads to parcels being returned instead of reaching customers. With Post Offices closing and the Royal Mail offering a parcel pick up service, many companies are now rethinking their delivery strategies and taking responsibility for their own parcel and post labelling. Efficient and Green SolutionsInvesting in technology like label printers has always been an option, but traditional products had limitations, such as needing to print several labels on one sheet of A4. The latest generation of linerless label printers is changing the game for small businesses. These printers use a roll of sticky labels that require no backing, offering a new level of flexibility. With linerless labels, companies can print labels of any size, allowing them to include all necessary information - barcodes, addresses, product safety information - on a single label. Linerless labels also support sustainability goals. Without a plastic liner, businesses are able to comply with the EU directive on packing and packaging waste more easily. Additionally, because labels are cut to size, there is no wastage. And with the price of linerless labels dropping significantly in recent years, there is no additional cost associated with this eco-friendly approach. BIXOLON offers a comprehensive range of linerless label printers to suit the printing needs of the user including the XL5-40 dedicated linerless label printer, alongside mobile linerless label printers available in 58 mm,80 mm and 112 mm width formats. Post Office ImprovementsLinerless label technology is also enhancing postal services’ delivery experiences. In Europe, postal workers use mobile linerless printers such as the SPP-R200III for ‘you were out’ parcel delivery information. Instead of scrawled paper notes that customers can barely read, postal workers can print the time of delivery, location of parcel for collection, and opening times on a label, which is then attached to a paper card and posted through the letterbox. This technology ensures there is no plastic waste created throughout the process, making it much easier and safer. Additionally, this technology is used to offer self-service access within Post Offices. Kiosks are becoming more popular too, allowing people to pay for shipping and print their address labels in the Post Office, which helps to reduce queue pressure. Printer manufacturers are leveraging vast amounts of data collected from diverse printer products to deliver the new levels of reliability that are essential for any self-service experience. BIXOLON offers a range of open frame printing mechanisms such as BK5-31 open frame kiosk printer or the XQ-840II stand-alone tablet label printer for kiosk install opportunities. ConclusionFor businesses in ecommerce, being able to offer flexible and reliable delivery options is crucial for customer satisfaction and repeat business. By taking control of the printing process small businesses can significantly improve delivery certainty for their customers. This proactive approach not only makes for an all-round improved customer experience, but also supports wider sustainability goals, ensuring that businesses stand out against their competitors, and are environmentally responsible. Erwin Müller improves e-commerce shipping with linerless labelling printers from BIXOLON

    November 14, 2023

BIXOLON Europe GmbH, a subsidiary of BIXOLON, the global manufacturer of advanced receipt, label and mobile printers, has partnered with the mail order and e-commerce retailer, Erwin Müller Versandhaus, to provide linerless labelling printers that improve operational efficiency and sustainability efforts during order fulfilment. The mail order, e-commerce home and houseware textile retailer has worked in conjunction with GreenForest IT GmbH and BIXOLON to acquire and install BIXOLON’s XL5-40CT Direct Thermal Linerless Printer with LCD Display and Serial and Ethernet Interfaces. Efficient, eco-friendling label printing that improves shipping operationsErwin Müller was founded in Germany in 1951. The family-run textile wholesaler has expanded over the years to become one of the leading mail order companies for home and household textiles. It has been trading online in the DACH region since 1997, and it scaled its operations internationally in 2009. The business is always considering how it can innovate and improve its proposition for customers. It identified an opportunity to enhance the internal operations of its e-commerce business – so an area it focused on improving centred on how its order fulfilment and shipping team could deploy more eco-friendly label printing. With that in mind, Erwin Müller sought a better labelling printing solution that would enable it to reduce waste during printing (e.g. remove the need for liners); enable it to deal with historic challenges associated with media storage on printers; and to reduce the expensive purchasing costs related to the previous traditional liner label printing solution that it used, which printed goods receipts, transfers, production orders and item refinement. After considering printer options, Erwin Müller settled on a linerless labelling printing solution that could be seamlessly integrated with its existing shipping and order fulfilment system. Speaking about the integration and upgrade, Andreas Straub, Head of IT, Erwin Müller Versandhaus GmbH says, “During the selection process, we had to consider factors such as compatibility of new technology and their existing systems, the availability of the required hardware and software and the overall feasibility of implementing the solution within our shipping department.” Results: installing the BIXOLON XL5-40CT Direct Thermal Linerless printer systemErwin Müller worked with system integrators Greenforest IT GmbH and BIXOLON to put together a tailored linerless printing solution for the retailer. Erwin Müller purchased the BIXOLON XL5-40CT Direct Thermal Linerless printer with LCD display, with Serial interface and Ethernet connection, capable printing at 203dpi print resolution. The printer is connected via an IP and configured to print from PCs running on a Windows system based in the warehouse. Erwin Müller has successfully deployed the new labelling solution within its shipping department. The new printers drive efficiency gains and have reduced costs, contributing to the overall improvement of shipping. They also reduce waste and align with the company’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its labelling process during fulfilment. Andreas Straub, Head of IT, Erwin Müller Versandhaus GmbH adds, “The implementation of the BIXOLON linerless printing solution has improved our shipping operations by increasing efficiency and speed, reducing waste and cutting down on operational costs. It contributes to a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach, positively impacting the company’s overall performance.” Jay Kim, Managing Director, BIXOLON Europe GmbH says, “Erwin Müller is a leader in its field and it has been great for BIXOLON to help it improve the operational efficiency within its fulfilment centres during shipping through using our XL5-40CT Direct Thermal Linerless Printer. Labels and the printing thereof are so important as part of the shipping process for e-commerce retailers, and this applies to almost any warehouse and logistics environment.” Kim goes onto say, “BIXOLON’s technological advancements and innovations are a key reason behind the selection of its printers by customers. Highlighted in products such as the XL5-40CT, BIXOLON holds the mechanical expertise to navigate the ongoing print and maintance complexities which are required when working with linerless adhesive media.” To find out more, visit BIXOLON at www.BIXOLON.com or contact your local sales representative.

3 Benefits of RFID Labelling for the Cannabis Industry

    April 25, 2023

3 Benefits of RFID Labelling for the Cannabis IndustryCannabis must be tracked and managed from seed to sale. Throughout the whole process cannabis growers and dispensaries can benefit from incorporating radio frequency identification (RFID) technology into their business operations. With RFID tags, cannabis growers can track plants across the seed cycle as well as provide documentation of daily operations to regulatory companies in accordance with state regulations. Dispensaries can utilize RFID technology to process and verify incoming cannabis products as well as real-time stock management. RFID technology offers several advantages for the cannabis industry, including these top three benefits: 1. Accurately Track CannabisRFID technology allows the cannabis industry to efficiently track seeds throughout the plant’s lifecycle; from the time a seed is planted until the sale. With complex and differing state laws, it’s important to ensure tracking is correctly reported internally as well as with regulators. Data on each item, such as the number of plants in a greenhouse or shipping verification for products received in a warehouse, can be bulk tracked to ensure accurate reporting to the respective regulator body as well as full visibility into business operations. 2. Real-time Inventory ManagementRFID labels allow dispensaries to easily track products in inventory. Spend less time on audits and stay compliant with regulatory inspections. Dispensaries can leverage real-time data to stay on top of inventory, quickly generate inventory reports, and track product performance. 3. Reduce Human ErrorDecrease human error and save time by relying on the accuracy of RFID technology. During daily operation documentation, cannabis growers can move away from time consuming and manual error-prone processes. RFID labels can store a variety of plant information. For example, employees in greenhouses can read several RFID tags at the same time, including those hidden from an employee’s sight allowing easy documentation and reporting. BIXOLON’s RFID PrintersTo help you make the right choice, BIXOLON provides printing solutions for every stage of the cannabis lifecycle. The Build-up of Retail Resilience through Digitalisation

    March 21, 2023

In recent times digitalisation has touched every aspect of retail as traditional offline Retailers have found they have had to quickly adapt and digitalise their sales and operations to come more competitive. Brick-and mortar stores have had to integrate omni-channel technology to streamline their stores and improve the customer experience. Harvesting data using these new technologies has allowed Retailers to utilise their declining footfall in physical stores by adapting them into e-fulfilment hubs. This is done by looking at under-performing store fronts and utilising the workable space to create both an instore buying experience with a mini fulfilment hub to offer physical purchases, click-and-collect and localised fulfilment shipping with inventory taken directly from the shop floor. However, Retailers using this type of business model require a very detailed tracking system to make sure that the correct stock is at the right location on time. The Importance of Inventory Labelling Labelling stock is central for the smooth running of this business model, from labelled stock arriving at stores to re-labelling shipments picked for ecommerce orders on the shop floor. Retailers need a clear, concise system to track all sellable items. With a click-and-collect, online delivery services and physical sales, Retailers also need to contend with consumer returns which will need to be clearly labelled as either faulty and returned to the central hub or tagged to go back onto the shop floor. With numerous technologies available on the market today, a popular technology combination is a simple handheld PDA linked up to an inventory management system which is paired to a label printer. Depending on the type of label printing volume required, either a desktop label printer or a mobile printer may be considered. Label media is also a factored consideration. With many different types of label media on the market today, traditional linered labelling is no longer the only go to option for Retailers. Linerless labelling has increased in popularity in recent years and is essentially label media without the backing paper. This eco-friendly labelling alternative allows variable length labelling and is available with either permanent or semi-permanent adhesive depending on your printing requirements. BIXOLON Printers BIXOLON offers a range of printing solution for inventory and price management labelling. These include the XT5-40 industrial label printer for high volume labelling with optional UHF RFID print-encoding capabilities. The XD5-40 4-inch (118mm) and XD3-40 4-inch (118mm) desktop Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer printer series’ which offer value added features to suit a range of budgets. Alongside, the XL5-40 desktop 4-inch dedicated desktop Linerless label printer. Alternatively, for a mobile solution, BIXOLON’s premium XM7 mobile label printer series offers 2-inch, 3-inch and 4-inch mobility liner and linerless labelling for printing on the go. How to Efficiently Print Shipping Labels for e-commerce Businesses

    January 31, 2023

How to Efficiently Print Shipping Labels for e-commerce Businesses Printing online shipping labels has a significant role in the success of an e-commerce business. With several printing options to choose from, we understand it can be hard to know which is right for your business. Direct thermal label printers do not have ribbon, ink, or toner. As the labels pass underneath the hot printhead, the thermal paper reacts to the heat of the printhead, blackening when heated to produce an image or text. A thermal label printer allows you to streamline your label printing process with speed and consistency to provide an excellent customer experience every step of the way. Each e-commerce shipment requires its own shipping label complete with accurate information. Data accuracy will improve as manual processes prone to human errors can be replaced with the ease of providing correct information to your customers. Making the switch from handwriting or manually copy/pasting information to utilizing a thermal label printer will save you valuable time to focus on other business activities. With over 20 years of experience and the label printer supplier to more than 30 international carriers, BIXOLON has the right printing solution for your e-commerce business. Click and Collect – closing the gap between instore and online fulfilment

    April 12, 2022

In the past 10 years, the gap between instore and online purchasing is beginning to close. Accelerated by the 2020 global pandemic, the rise in popularity of click and collect has enabled retailers to combine their current instore and online offerings. Providing convenience to both the customer and the retailer, click and collect has enabled businesses to turn their stores into fulfilment centre hubs – drawing inventory from shelves to fulfil online orders. These stores are also now being used as return centres which in turn centralises the control of a business’s inventory distribution. Technology within the fulfilment process has become integral to the smooth running of the collection and return process. The need for clear, concise labelling of key information such as order numbers and customer details through QR codes, barcodes, text and logos is essential for outgoing items which are picked and packed from both the shop floor and storeroom. While customer returns also require labelling so an item can be put back on sale or returned to the central hub if required. Desktop label printers placed at certain key checkpoints either at the front or back of house, supplemented with mobile labelling solutions enable convenient printing as part of a larger POS system which might include PCs, tablets, scanners and weighing scales. Label printers for effective fulfilmentBIXOLON supports a range of industrial, desktop and mobile label printing solutions which can be tailored to a retailers chosen fulfilment requirements. Options include the XQ-840 Android tablet mounted 4-inch desktop label printer which allows staff to print internal labels and read barcodes through the scanner connected to the printer. The XT5-40 industrial label printer which allows high volume, precision labelling with RFID printing capabilities. The XD5-40 quality desktop labelling solution offers direct thermal, thermal transfer or RFID label printing options. Alternatively the XL5-40 dedicated linerless label printer which offers on demand labelling for a range of adhesive strengths. Mobile RFID Labelling for Warehouse Management

    March 15, 2022

Warehouses of all sizes continue to adopt radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to dramatically streamline their data capture. RFID labelling offers several advantages for warehouse management over standard barcodes including inventory control and a reduction in errors. Desktop RFID printers may limit the benefits of RFID labelling. Due to the printer being fixed or stationary, it requires warehouse staff to spend a considerable amount of time travelling to-and-from a centralized print station within a warehouse to print the necessary RFID label(s). Conveniently and efficiently print labels at the point of application with mobile RFID printers. Advantages of Mobile RFID TechnologyAddress the pain points fixed or stationary RFID printers may cause for your warehouse operations by adding mobile RFID printers. Mobile solutions further improve warehouse workflows by eliminating the wasteful walk between the items needing a label and the printing workstation. Save time and reduce the errors with less potential distractions that may arise during the walks to print labels. Additionally, recognize the labor cost savings and productivity gains ultimately resulting in a rapid ROI. The Importance of Shipping Labels for an Efficient Postal Network

    July 6, 2021

It is estimated that the global parcel industry was valued at $500 billion in 2020, up from just $450 billion in 2018* with an estimated 284.4 billion letters being sent globally in 2019**. Identified as a key global industry, maintaining efficiency within the worldwide postal network is crucial to ensure the free-flow of letters and parcel deliveries. With many touchpoints throughout the delivery process, it is vital for correct shipping labelling to enable letters and parcels reach their final destinations. Clear and concise shipping labelling serves as key information for both logistics service providers and customs staff. Providing information on the sender and recipient, content descriptions, weights and quantities, alongside relevant tracking information normally in the form of barcodes or even RFID tagging to enable the easy tracing of the letters and parcels throughout their journeys. The importance of good quality labelling materialsIn recent times thermal label printing has become the norm for effective label creation. Achieved by a thermal printer heating up a special chemical coating on the thermal paper backed with adhesive, it enables the efficient creation of clear, concise creation of text, graphics, barcodes and QR labels which can be attached directly to a parcel or letter. Traditionally thermal labels are pre-cut and set onto a roll of backing paper. Due to the pre-determined size this can sometimes be quite limiting, so items being sent can often have multiple affixed labels which require additional printing time and can lead to confusion.BIXOLON has recently launched a new patented, high quality labelling solution allowing printed labels media of variable lengths which works in conjunction with a selection of BIXOLON printers with built-in firmware to cut labels on the label’s black mark. B-POST Label™A one-stop solution which generates a range of label lengths for a variety of applications from invoicing to shipping labels, electronic stamps for post office counter automation and franking machines. Using high quality thermal labelling material, B-POST Label™ guarantees high quality, consistent labelling supported by BIXOLON’s industry recognised reliable printing hardware. Correct Labelling – the Backbone to Effeciency Within the Global Postal Industry

    March 9, 2021

The value of the global post industry topped an estimated $409.8BN in 2018*. With global parcel volumes reaching 87 billion that same year, the increase in demand is on track to reach an estimated 200 billion parcels sent globally a year by 2025**. As the backbone of the world’s ecomony, the postal industry delivers vital packages from food and water to medical supplies and personal goods. With the Covid global pandemic, the postal industry has been leaned on further due to the shift in consumer trends towards home delivery. Technology has ensured the safe and fast parcel delivery, but packages require shipping information support for their successful delivery. But what is the key factor that ensures the efficient shipment of a product or asset? Documenting key information on labelling a parcel or pallet when shipping is crucial for its successful delivery. Typically labels contains the name and address of both the sender and the recipient, the type of shipping service chosen, the content description, a tracking number and barcode/QR code that ensures the correct handling of the shipment by the logistics company. The barcode/QR code on the label is scanned at various hub points throughout its to track the parcel’s progress. High quality, consistent printing of labels is essential for the smooth running of this process, so scanners can read the barcode/QR codes and delivery details can be easily identified. With many high quality label printing solutions on the market today consideration needs to be taken into the application for which the printer will be used and the label media required. Traditionally label media comes as fixed label lengths which limits the amount of content which can be added per label often resulting in multiple labels to display information. It is also limited by the number of labels per roll due to the silicon backing paper. However, in recent years there has been a surge in popularity for linerless label printing. A cost effective, flexible labelling solution available offers a range of adhesive strengths depending on the required application. They provide up to 40% more labels per roll at variable lengths than traditional media by removing the requirement of silicon backing paper. BIXOLON offers a range of specialised traditional label and linerless printers to suit many requirements and budgets.
