Erwin Müller improves e-commerce shipping with linerless labelling printers from BIXOLON

    November 14, 2023

BIXOLON Europe GmbH, a subsidiary of BIXOLON, the global manufacturer of advanced receipt, label and mobile printers, has partnered with the mail order and e-commerce retailer, Erwin Müller Versandhaus, to provide linerless labelling printers that improve operational efficiency and sustainability efforts during order fulfilment. The mail order, e-commerce home and houseware textile retailer has worked in conjunction with GreenForest IT GmbH and BIXOLON to acquire and install BIXOLON’s XL5-40CT Direct Thermal Linerless Printer with LCD Display and Serial and Ethernet Interfaces. Efficient, eco-friendling label printing that improves shipping operationsErwin Müller was founded in Germany in 1951. The family-run textile wholesaler has expanded over the years to become one of the leading mail order companies for home and household textiles. It has been trading online in the DACH region since 1997, and it scaled its operations internationally in 2009. The business is always considering how it can innovate and improve its proposition for customers. It identified an opportunity to enhance the internal operations of its e-commerce business – so an area it focused on improving centred on how its order fulfilment and shipping team could deploy more eco-friendly label printing. With that in mind, Erwin Müller sought a better labelling printing solution that would enable it to reduce waste during printing (e.g. remove the need for liners); enable it to deal with historic challenges associated with media storage on printers; and to reduce the expensive purchasing costs related to the previous traditional liner label printing solution that it used, which printed goods receipts, transfers, production orders and item refinement. After considering printer options, Erwin Müller settled on a linerless labelling printing solution that could be seamlessly integrated with its existing shipping and order fulfilment system. Speaking about the integration and upgrade, Andreas Straub, Head of IT, Erwin Müller Versandhaus GmbH says, “During the selection process, we had to consider factors such as compatibility of new technology and their existing systems, the availability of the required hardware and software and the overall feasibility of implementing the solution within our shipping department.” Results: installing the BIXOLON XL5-40CT Direct Thermal Linerless printer systemErwin Müller worked with system integrators Greenforest IT GmbH and BIXOLON to put together a tailored linerless printing solution for the retailer. Erwin Müller purchased the BIXOLON XL5-40CT Direct Thermal Linerless printer with LCD display, with Serial interface and Ethernet connection, capable printing at 203dpi print resolution. The printer is connected via an IP and configured to print from PCs running on a Windows system based in the warehouse. Erwin Müller has successfully deployed the new labelling solution within its shipping department. The new printers drive efficiency gains and have reduced costs, contributing to the overall improvement of shipping. They also reduce waste and align with the company’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its labelling process during fulfilment. Andreas Straub, Head of IT, Erwin Müller Versandhaus GmbH adds, “The implementation of the BIXOLON linerless printing solution has improved our shipping operations by increasing efficiency and speed, reducing waste and cutting down on operational costs. It contributes to a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach, positively impacting the company’s overall performance.” Jay Kim, Managing Director, BIXOLON Europe GmbH says, “Erwin Müller is a leader in its field and it has been great for BIXOLON to help it improve the operational efficiency within its fulfilment centres during shipping through using our XL5-40CT Direct Thermal Linerless Printer. Labels and the printing thereof are so important as part of the shipping process for e-commerce retailers, and this applies to almost any warehouse and logistics environment.” Kim goes onto say, “BIXOLON’s technological advancements and innovations are a key reason behind the selection of its printers by customers. Highlighted in products such as the XL5-40CT, BIXOLON holds the mechanical expertise to navigate the ongoing print and maintance complexities which are required when working with linerless adhesive media.” To find out more, visit BIXOLON at www.BIXOLON.com or contact your local sales representative.

The Role of RFID Labelling in the Retail Shopping Experience

    October 24, 2023

In the ever-changing world of retail, staying ahead of the curve to meet consumer demands is essential to remaining competitive. With many new technologies on the market today, RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) labelling has emerged as a game-changer transforming the way retailers manage their inventory, streamline business operations, and even enhancing their customer experiences. In this blog, BIXOLON will explore the impact of RFID labelling for the Retail industry. What is RFID Technology RFID is a form of wireless technology that uses radio waves to identify and track objects. It consists of three main components: an RFID reader, RFID tags and a software system or database for data management. Typically, in retail RFID label tags are attached to products and RFID readers or beacons are then used to capture the data stored on these tags, enabling real-time identification and monitoring of an individual item. The Role of RFID Labelling in Retail• Inventory ManagementThe main benefit of RFID labelling in retail is the ability to standardise inventory management in warehouses, stockrooms and even on the shop floor. Traditional barcode labelling systems require the manual scanning of individual items, which takes time and is prone to errors. Whereas RFID labelling allows retailers to simultaneously scan and log multiple items improving efficiency and accuracy. With RFID, retailers can track inventory in real-time to monitor stock levels, to ensure availability and minimise excess inventory.• Los PreventionRFID labelling is an effective tool for loss prevention and security in retail. Typically attached to desirable products such as high value goods, technology or sportswear, RFID labels track the movement of products throughout the store and can quickly be identified by triggering an alert if there is any suspicious activity which deters theft and reduces shrinkage.• Data AnalyticsData generated by RFID technology also provides retailers with valuable insights to analyse and understand sales trends, product preferences and even customer behaviour. This information can then determine future business decisions such as inventory, store layouts and even marketing strategies.• Customer ExperienceRFID tagging can also enhance the customer experience. When working in tandem with other technologies it can be used for effective self-service checkouts or simply allowing customers to simply walk out of the store with their items which are logged by beacons and automatically charged to their accounts. This type of flexibility reduces staffing levels and customer wait times, while improving convenience. As RFID labelling transforms the retail industry, it will become more integrated into the retail landscape, shaping the way businesses operate and interact with their customers. To stay competitive, businesses must investigate RFID labelling technology to harness its potential for future operations. Manufacturers such as BIXOLON offer a range of intuitive RFID printers using the popular UHF RFID print and encoding technology. The Build-up of Retail Resilience through Digitalisation

    March 21, 2023

In recent times digitalisation has touched every aspect of retail as traditional offline Retailers have found they have had to quickly adapt and digitalise their sales and operations to come more competitive. Brick-and mortar stores have had to integrate omni-channel technology to streamline their stores and improve the customer experience. Harvesting data using these new technologies has allowed Retailers to utilise their declining footfall in physical stores by adapting them into e-fulfilment hubs. This is done by looking at under-performing store fronts and utilising the workable space to create both an instore buying experience with a mini fulfilment hub to offer physical purchases, click-and-collect and localised fulfilment shipping with inventory taken directly from the shop floor. However, Retailers using this type of business model require a very detailed tracking system to make sure that the correct stock is at the right location on time. The Importance of Inventory Labelling Labelling stock is central for the smooth running of this business model, from labelled stock arriving at stores to re-labelling shipments picked for ecommerce orders on the shop floor. Retailers need a clear, concise system to track all sellable items. With a click-and-collect, online delivery services and physical sales, Retailers also need to contend with consumer returns which will need to be clearly labelled as either faulty and returned to the central hub or tagged to go back onto the shop floor. With numerous technologies available on the market today, a popular technology combination is a simple handheld PDA linked up to an inventory management system which is paired to a label printer. Depending on the type of label printing volume required, either a desktop label printer or a mobile printer may be considered. Label media is also a factored consideration. With many different types of label media on the market today, traditional linered labelling is no longer the only go to option for Retailers. Linerless labelling has increased in popularity in recent years and is essentially label media without the backing paper. This eco-friendly labelling alternative allows variable length labelling and is available with either permanent or semi-permanent adhesive depending on your printing requirements. BIXOLON Printers BIXOLON offers a range of printing solution for inventory and price management labelling. These include the XT5-40 industrial label printer for high volume labelling with optional UHF RFID print-encoding capabilities. The XD5-40 4-inch (118mm) and XD3-40 4-inch (118mm) desktop Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer printer series’ which offer value added features to suit a range of budgets. Alongside, the XL5-40 desktop 4-inch dedicated desktop Linerless label printer. Alternatively, for a mobile solution, BIXOLON’s premium XM7 mobile label printer series offers 2-inch, 3-inch and 4-inch mobility liner and linerless labelling for printing on the go. Supermarket Inventory Management Labelling

    February 24, 2023

Globally more than 900 million tonnes of food is thrown away each year according to the UN.* Food retailers such as supermarkets and grocers have increasing consumer responsibility paired with the increasing importance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives to efficiently manage and reduce unnecessary food waste. For any supermarket, managing perishable inventory is an ongoing challenge as customers demand the freshest food with the widest choice. Seasonal variation in consumption and changes in buying habits can lead to surplus supplies and consequential food waste. Although there are a number of efforts retailers can go to elevate this issue such as charity donations; product mark downs or expiration date-based discounting is the normally the first step retailers take to encourage customers to purchase goods to avoid disposal and maintain a product margin. Product Markdown Technology Product markdowns are traditionally done towards the end of the day on perishable goods such as baked, dairy, fruits and vegetables which are highlighted by brightly coloured labels which often include a barcode plus pricing to easily scan and emphasise a mark-down price. Markdowns are typically done on the shop floor by assistants using a range of labelling procedures from traditional hand written labels to pre-defined pricing guns. However, as POS technology continues to evolve, retailers are now aiding assistants with PDAs and mobile printers which are either transported on a trolley or worn with strap. These devices link directly to the supermarket’s inventory system via the cloud to provide barcode labelling on the go. Handheld labelling technology opens up the opportunity to improve efficiency by allowing multiple users to markdown products with a label which features the price and a barcode which can be instantly scanned by the customer at the checkout. Working with a range of PDA manufacturers and supporting multiple software platforms, BIXOLON’s XM7-20 premium mobile printer offers the perfect solution for product labelling and markdowns XM7-20 Key Features 2-inch (58 mm) Liner and Linerless Mobile Label Printer Simultaneously connects both Bluetooth 5.0 (MFi certified) and Dual-band WLAN (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) Compatibility with major operations including Android™, iOS™ and Windows® Smart battery providing visibility over status and life cycle Embedded peeler and paper guide Direct printing from SAP® Smart Forms and compatibility with a range of label editing applications including BIXOLON’s Label Artist™ and BarTender® For more information on BIXOLON mobile labelling solutions for retail, visit www.Bixolon.com or contact your local BIXOLON sales representative. *euronews.com

Click and Collect – closing the gap between instore and online fulfilment

    April 12, 2022

In the past 10 years, the gap between instore and online purchasing is beginning to close. Accelerated by the 2020 global pandemic, the rise in popularity of click and collect has enabled retailers to combine their current instore and online offerings. Providing convenience to both the customer and the retailer, click and collect has enabled businesses to turn their stores into fulfilment centre hubs – drawing inventory from shelves to fulfil online orders. These stores are also now being used as return centres which in turn centralises the control of a business’s inventory distribution. Technology within the fulfilment process has become integral to the smooth running of the collection and return process. The need for clear, concise labelling of key information such as order numbers and customer details through QR codes, barcodes, text and logos is essential for outgoing items which are picked and packed from both the shop floor and storeroom. While customer returns also require labelling so an item can be put back on sale or returned to the central hub if required. Desktop label printers placed at certain key checkpoints either at the front or back of house, supplemented with mobile labelling solutions enable convenient printing as part of a larger POS system which might include PCs, tablets, scanners and weighing scales. Label printers for effective fulfilmentBIXOLON supports a range of industrial, desktop and mobile label printing solutions which can be tailored to a retailers chosen fulfilment requirements. Options include the XQ-840 Android tablet mounted 4-inch desktop label printer which allows staff to print internal labels and read barcodes through the scanner connected to the printer. The XT5-40 industrial label printer which allows high volume, precision labelling with RFID printing capabilities. The XD5-40 quality desktop labelling solution offers direct thermal, thermal transfer or RFID label printing options. Alternatively the XL5-40 dedicated linerless label printer which offers on demand labelling for a range of adhesive strengths. The Importance of Zero Waste Store Weigh Labelling Solutions

    October 26, 2021

“The world generates 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste annually with at least 33% of that not managed in an environmentally safe manner. Global waste is expected to grow to 3.40 billion tonnes by 2050, more than double the population growth over the same period” – The World Bank. As the world is being forced to review the sustainability and the environmental impact of its current actions, global warming is becoming a hot topic for conversation with new policies and strategies evolving into our everyday lives. World leaders and individuals alike are looking for ways to reduce global and personal waste to live more sustainably. With country and personal initiatives now filtering down to local shopping malls and high streets there has been a visible growth in consumer popularity for zero waste stores. What is a Zero Waste Store? The concept of zero-waste stores first originated in Europe, but is quickly becoming a global trend with major supermarket chains trialling sustainable packaging and self-service produce. As the world is becoming more socially aware of the sustainability and the requirement to reduce waste, many are turning to alternative lifestyles changing the ways they shop. Typically a zero waste stores sells items without plastic packaging, offering a range of goods from dried food such as grains, nuts and pulses, to fresh produce, coffee and chocolate plus, laundry products, homewares and cosmetics. Many shops also have an exclusive range of fresh organic and ethically locally sourced items which can only be found in season. The importance of shop technologyCharacteristically zero-waste stores are small holdings offering a limited range of goods. Customers are encouraged to self-serve measuring the goods they want to take home by filling reusable containers or paper bags. Making it paramount for an efficient POS system with a weighing scale and a labelling system for the smooth running of the business. There are many labelling options on the market to choose from, from traditional labelling using pre-cut, liner backed labels to new liner-free, linerless labelling solutions. As an environmentally-friendly labelling alternative, linerless labelling is a simple way to enhance work processes and reduce costs. The media’s technology significantly reduces paper thickness by removing the liner which adds up to 40% more paper length per roll. This variable length solution is capable to printing multiple length labels on a roll which requires less roll changes which in turn reduces emissions and the volume of carbon waste. Linerless labelling also comes with a range of adhesive strengths from semi-to permanent depending on the activity required. BIXOLON offers a range of linerless labelling printing solutions to which can be easily integrated into new and existing POS setups. Offering a range solutions at competitive price points, BIXOLON’s linerless range are ideal for any retail environment. Streamlining Retail Price Management Printing

    February 9, 2021

Whether it’s a small Convenience Store or a nationwide Retail Chain, maintaining pricing compliance across your entire product stock is a challenge by making sure the tags on sometimes thousands of items replicates its ideal pricing direction. Depending on the types of goods on sale, whether it be long life items or perishable goods, Retailers feel under pressure to execute online style timed price adjustments to remain competitive and maintain customer satisfaction. The physical act of adjusting a price tag or shelf edge labelling can be an arduous task, depending on the type of technology used it can also cost retailers in time and man hours. Traditionally price tags and shelf edge labels are printed in large quantities to produce a stack in the back office where products are either tagged in store rooms, warehouses or brought out to update on the shop floor. However printing stacks of price tags and shelf labels often comes with a number of issues. Printing in high volumes a number of different price information can often prove to be time consuming in the printing and then identifying the relevant tag to update a product. Waste is also an issue if a product pricing has been produced at high volume in error. As pricing printing updates are typically done through a back-of-office ERP system, staff can often be missing from the shop floor or additional staff are required to make the relevant pricing adjustments. To alleviate these issues many retailers are now turning to mobile printing solutions which can be integrated into their current ERP systems. Pairing a mobile printer with a handheld terminal, retail staff now have access to a range of product information available while on-the-go. Product price tags and shelf edge labelling can be updated in seconds while still remaining present on the shop floor. By using portable handheld devices to print high quality barcode and pricing information as required, it improves employee efficiency while providing important product information and the ability to printer a product label in the palm of their hand. Track and Trace of Fast-Moving Consumer Goods

    January 20, 2021

There has been exponential growth in the demand of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) or consumer packaged goods (CPG) which are often inelastic products which often touch every part of consumer life; including durable essential household items, perishable and packaged foods, beverages, toiletries, cosmetics, over-the-counter drugs and more. These types of products are typically characterised as frequent purchase goods, offered at low prices, with a short shelf life and have rapid consumption. They are classically sold at high volume and are delivered through an extensive and often complex distribution network. The logistics supply chain is crucial in the success of FMCG distribution. Transportation of FMCG products are in high demand where the timed delivery of often perishable goods to customers is crucial. Managing and maintaining complex schedules and delivery routes can often be challenging as the distribution network for high paced products is so widespread, which means tracking products between the merchant and the recipient is often very difficult. So the requirement for a Proof of Delivery note has become an essential piece of certification to prove the shipment has reached its final destination. What is the importance of Proof of Delivery? The Proof of Delivery (POD) function acts as a receipt to prove that a delivery has been completed. The POD provides accountability that the products have left the merchant’s premises and has reached its recipient. Typically finalised by a signature on the receipt, a POD normally includes important information such as the recipient’s name, time and date of delivery, address, contents of delivery and other related information.Originally produced as a 2 copy hand written document to be signed and kept by the recipient and the merchant, ways to speed up the accuracy and tacking of this service has evolved. Technology has been introduced where drivers now typically use handheld PDA devices connected to either a portable printer to provide a printed form of receipt once signed onscreen by the recipient or producing an electronic receipt which can be sent directly to the customer upon signature signoff. Printed receipts provide improved accuracy, immediate confirmation of the transaction and can be tailored depending on the recipient’s requirements. Premium Mobility Printing From BIXOLONBIXOLON’s range of mobile printing solutions offer receipt, ticket and label printing capabilities which can be adapted to the user’s requirements. Linerless Labelling Solutions for E-commerce Logistics

    December 8, 2020

In today’s current economic climate, consumers are now turning to e-commerce not only due to convenience, but a way to access goods and services during the current pandemic situation. With heavy investment from businesses worldwide, the e-commerce business model is gaining momentum as a trading alternative within these uncertain times. E-commerce has created a logistics boom and the volumes of shipping labels which are now required are increasing rapidly. However with the uptake of labelling, there is a demand for the printing industry technology to evolve. Backing liner from traditional labels is often complicated and costly to dispose of. Some countries are already trying to tackle this issue by adding a tax on label backing liners as a packaging material. As an environmentally-friendly labelling alternative, businesses of all sizes are now turning to Linerless labelling, a labelling solution without backing liners. By significantly reducing paper thickness by removing the liner has added up to 40% more paper length per roll, which saves on costs and the environment. It improves work efficiency and reduces downtime required to load new paper rolls. Also removing unwanted liners which can sometimes end up on the ground. Linerless labelling is not a new solution, however the demand has grown in the numerous markets. With all technology, it doesn’t come without its challenges. There is often difficulty in ensuring reliability of the Auto Cutter and the handling of linerless media which can be overpriced and sometimes inconsistent in quality. Linerless labelling is a tricky material to handle as it may cause unexpected issues due to its high adhesiveness and absence of a liner. The key to being successful within this business is to procure the right media from the right channels. BIXOLON provides a range of linerless paper supplies called B-linerless™, supporting a wide range of media which will guarantee the reliable performance at a reasonable price. BIXOLON also offers a range of specialised printers, including the XL5-40, that guarantee industry’s No.1 reliability of the Auto Cutter. The XL5-40 delivers anti-jamming, anti-curling, long-lasting two platen rollers, special paper path and top down guillotine cutting system with high reliability. Another special function comes with BIXOLON’s peel off sensor, Taken Sensor™, next label will only be printed once the current label has been removed. Printing in Chilled and Cold Conditions

    December 3, 2019

Printing in Chilled and Cold Conditions Technology use is developing at a pace and the use of mobility is driving change in many vertical markets. A growing mobile workforce means printing at the point of picking, packing, identification or dispatch is accessible to all corners of the warehouse or every doorstep in town. However, how can you be sure that your print quality is maintained across a range of temperatures? The operation of thermal printers in conditions with less than ambient temperatures will often result in poor, illegible print output if any at all. There are an increasing number of companies in the postal, medical, retail and pharmaceutical sectors looking for more effective labelling solutions in cold conditions. Traditional operating procedures - printing in one place and labelling elsewhere, mean that processes cannot be improved. This is counterintuitive to what is actually happening in many verticals. The refrigerated production, storage and distribution of foods and medicines is experiencing growth and this is resulting in investment in this sector. Some of this is due to our changing consumer habits and our wish for fresher foods faster, plus we are witnessing improving legislation to make our foods and medicines safer. Whilst sensors, data, networking and AI might be components parts of these temperature-controlled supply chains it is still in many cases the humble barcode that instigates this activity. Therefore, having the ability to print a quality barcode at source is paramount. Unseasonal weather conditions or longer, more inclement winters are also a consideration when addressing the printing needs for a workforce operating outside in chilled and cold conditions. Workers in many verticals, including Agriculture, Forestry, Parking Management, Policing, Scene of Crime and Postal, have a need to output a variety of different print formats – identification or asset labels, receipts or notifications, which are expected to be available on-demand. BIXOLON's award winning design of mobile printers have proven cold temperature operation.
