Globally more than 900 million tonnes of food is thrown away each year according to the UN.* Food retailers such as supermarkets and grocers have increasing consumer responsibility paired with the increasing importance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives to efficiently manage and reduce unnecessary food waste.

For any supermarket, managing perishable inventory is an ongoing challenge as customers demand the freshest food with the widest choice. Seasonal variation in consumption and changes in buying habits can lead to surplus supplies and consequential food waste. Although there are a number of efforts retailers can go to elevate this issue such as charity donations; product mark downs or expiration date-based discounting is the normally the first step retailers take to encourage customers to purchase goods to avoid disposal and maintain a product margin.

Product Markdown Technology
Product markdowns are traditionally done towards the end of the day on perishable goods such as baked, dairy, fruits and vegetables which are highlighted by brightly coloured labels which often include a barcode plus pricing to easily scan and emphasise a mark-down price.

Markdowns are typically done on the shop floor by assistants using a range of labelling procedures from traditional hand written labels to pre-defined pricing guns. However, as POS technology continues to evolve, retailers are now aiding assistants with PDAs and mobile printers which are either transported on a trolley or worn with strap. These devices link directly to the supermarket’s inventory system via the cloud to provide barcode labelling on the go. Handheld labelling technology opens up the opportunity to improve efficiency by allowing multiple users to markdown products with a label which features the price and a barcode which can be instantly scanned by the customer at the checkout.
